Cimarron Groundwater Remediation Project

What’s happening?

The Cimarron Groundwater Remediation Project is a long-term environmental cleanup taking place just south of Crescent, Oklahoma near Highways 74 and 33. In the coming weeks, new activities will begin to support the next phase of remediation for the Cimarron site.

This project is managed by Environmental Properties Management LLC, Trustee of the Cimarron Environmental Response Trust and overseen by state and federal environmental agencies, including the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Purpose & Need

The Cimarron Groundwater Remediation Project is the final phase of decommissioning for the Cimarron Facility. This phase focuses on treating groundwater in specific areas to meet the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s criteria to release the property from radiological controls.

Project Background

A nuclear fuel production facility was previously located at the Cimarron site. The production facility was completely cleaned up, and the property containing the buildings was sold. Extensive environmental cleanup has taken place, including the excavation and disposal of contaminated soil and formerly buried waste, and the removal of all the impoundments and pipelines.

What you might notice

While most work happens inside the site, here’s what neighbors and passersby might observe:

Visibility

  • Occasional pickup trucks or delivery vehicles entering or exiting the site

  • During construction, some materials may be staged in the paved lot near the entrance of the site

  • Limited equipment activity may be visible from Hwy 74

  • Nearly all activities will take place out of public view

Noise

  • Very low-level noise, if any, from earthmoving equipment

  • No continuous or disruptive activity near homes

Traffic

  • Light construction traffic such as pickup trucks and concrete trucks

  • Large trucks and heavy machinery will only be transported on state highways and site roads

Dust & Odor

  • Dust control measures will be in place

  • No odors or fumes are associated with this work

Is it safe?

Yes. The project is designed with protective measures in place to safeguard the public, the Cimarron River, and local sources of drinking water.

This work represents the final phase of a carefully managed cleanup process, focused on treating groundwater with advanced technology to remove residual industrial materials. The cleanup will reduce groundwater concentrations to levels where the property no longer requires a license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Monitoring and controls are in place to protect the Cimarron River and local water supplies throughout the process. The work is not expected to generate odors, dust, or disruptive noise, and most activities will occur out of public view.
